Quick overview On 10 October 1918, the Irish ship RMS Leinster was torpedoed and sunk in the Irish Sea, with the loss of over 560 lives. Philip Lecane’s book tells the story of the women and children who were aboard the ship. They include the stewardesses, military and civilian nurses, members of the recently formed Women’s Royal Naval Service (the Wrens) and civilian passengers, including three women on honeymoon. The book also looks at the children who were on the ship. Some were the children of military personnel, others were the daughters and sons of civilians. In appendices, the book identifies the lifeboats in which particular people survived and tells the story of a young American sailor who was lost in the sinking.
