Some of the most important political events that impacted on Ireland revolved around The Liberties – the Reformation of Henry VIII, the 1798 Rebellion, the 1803 Rising, 1848, the Famine, 1916 and the War of Independence. Moreover, The Liberties for centuries was the very backbone of Dublin’s economic life with Jacob’s, Powers, Jameson’s and of course Guinness’s Brewery. Besides the renowned cathedrals and the world-famous brewery, we find much else in THE LIBERTIES. These include Dublin’s Lucky Stone, the old Walls of Dublin and a place called Hell. Tailors Hall was where much of the planning for the 1798 Rebellion took place. Nearby is John’s Lane Church and the famous and beautiful Harry Clarke stained glass windows. Next door was the former Power’s Distillery, now the NCAD. Further along is St Patrick’s Windmill across from Guinness’s Brewery. In Meath Street we have the Bull Ring and Kevin Barry disguised as a saint. Francis Street is replete with laughing heads and Santa Claus. It was also home to Dean Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels and known as the Monarch of the Liberties. Numerous characters including, Zozimus, Bang Bang and Biddy Mulligan ‘Pride of the Coombe’ populated the area. In music and literature, we include James Clarence Mangan, John Field, James Stephens, the Dubliners, the Wolfe Tones, the Furey’s and Chieftains and many more. And not forgetting Jimmy O’Dea, Imelda May, Brenda Fricker and Brendan Grace. These are all part of what makes this a fascinating and dynamic area. It has ambience, atmosphere and attitude and this riveting book captures some of that unique charm.
