€20.00

SELTON HILL tells the story of Leitrim’s most catastrophic military engagement during the War of Independence.

Late in the afternoon of March 11, 1921, in a brief, but bloody encounter with Crown forces, in the townland of Selton, near Gorvagh in Co. Leitrim, six IRA Volunteers lost their lives.

The consequences of that fateful evening were considerable with families shattered, South Leitrim Brigade IRA decimated, two more deaths and two families fleeing the country.

The efforts to commemorate the IRA Volunteers that culminated in the erection of the Selton Hill monument in 1936, gives a real insight into the post-Civil War division in rural Ireland.

A century later, using, both newly discovered and recently released archival material the story is told.
