He led his county to a long awaited All-Ireland victory in 1960, and the following summer he captained the Mourne men and brought the Sam Maguire Cup back across the border a second time.Doherty continued to rip apart defences throughout the decade and won a third All-Ireland crown with Down in 1968, when the Mournemen defeated Kerry in September for the second time, to add to seven Ulster titles and three National league titles.
